I’ve decided to look at the Crowe et al (2008) study. With the brief information given in the article it sounds like the researchers were able to include the patients at all levels of the study. They were present and actively participating from the conception to the dissemination of the results. From what I have heard so far during these webinars and from the rest of this paper, it sounds as if many studies to use patient engagement do not have such a constant and active role for the patients. A quick read of the study design shows that there is community input at every level of the study and with the ability to make decisions a various phases of the research.

The paper by Swartz et al. exemplified great dedication to patient engagement. The explanation provided shows that various community members were involved in the study from the beginning and throughout the study. As mentioned in the previous paper/session, the individuals joined an advisory board and took on a role as a partner in research. The other steps of involvement included developing the study protocol, recruitment procedures, selection of outcomes, attending educational seminars/presentations, and execution of the study intervention. This level of patient engagement is therefore truly extraordinary and acts as a proper example for effective and proper patient engagement.
